The acronym "Lukuru" is derived from the names of the two major water routes within the original Lukuru Project (see Our Projects page) zone, the Lukuru and the Sankuru River. It was born in 1992 through the ideology of the ethnic groups living within the Lukuru Project domain who continue to maintain their ancestral taboo against consuming bonobo meat, their traditional conservation practices of protecting special species recognized by their ancestors, and the encouragement of our Executive Director.
In 2006, when approached by Drs. John and Terese Hart, the Foundation raised its theater of influence to serve as a platform for a variety of independent conservation efforts that fall within our mission. The common theme is our focus on preserving great apes and their habitat within the territorial boundaries of the Democratic Republic of Congo. In addition to protecting bonobo populations, this widened our scope to include other species of conservation priority concern including gorillas, forest elephants, chimpanzees, okapis, and more. Our work continues to build upon the Lukuru Project foundation of experience working for conservation through accomplished goals.
